INTERVIEW: DYRO

Dyro2

Dutch breakout Dyro surfaced in 2013 as one of the scene’s hottest new stars. Debuting at #30 in the DJ Mag Top 100 poll, he became the youngest ‘Highest New Entry’ artist to ever appear in the definitive DJ poll. Known for driving bass lines, enchanting melodies and highly charged drops, he has seamlessly made the transition from bedroom musician to renowned international DJ and producer. Previously recognized by the likes of World #1 DJ Hardwell, Laidback Luke, and Dada Life as their ‘Breakthrough Artist of 2012’, the 21 year old star has lived up to the praise bestowed upon him and cemented his standing with seminal releases like his first Beatport # 1 record alongside Hardwell for ‘Never Say Goodbye’, as well as an extended streak of visibility on the global clubbing circuit. On December 31st, he’s taking over the stage at Glitter & Gold NYE in Calgary to deliver his magic alongside with Hardwell. clubZone caught up with him to know what he has to say about his accomplishments in 2013 and more.

Jordy, it’s great to catch up with you! Where in the world are you at the moment?
Hey, I am currently in the US playing a number of shows over here.

How would you describe what you do to somebody you’ve just met?
I am lucky enough to travel the world playing music to people as they party. When I am not on the road playing shows I am locked up in my studio making beats.

You’ve got a new release on Revealed Recordings ‘You Gotta Know’. Tell us how this track came to life.
Yeah, it came out a few weeks ago and the response has been really amazing. Radboud sung the vocal, he is amazingly talented and it brought the track together so well. It’s a little different from my other tracks, perhaps a bit more radio friendly but it still has that Dyro feel to it.

You’re playing at BMO Centre with Hardwell, in Calgary, for their Glitter & Gold 2014  NYE. What can we expect from you on this special night?
It is going to be a really special show. Whenever me and Hardwell are on the line up amazing things seem to happen. Both of us are so focused on creating the right vibe for the party and connecting with the fans so that the energy in the room will be at another level. I am sure between us we will have a host of new edits and exclusive tracks to debut that night. It is going to be a brilliant way to see 2014.

You’ve just got the highest newcomer entry on the Top 100 DJ Poll. How do you feel about it?
It is amazing to be picked for this award by the fans and it is great to be placed in the list surrounded by such esteemed company, but I don’t think it is anything more than a marker as to what you have achieved that year. If anything it will only serve to motivate me to keep delivering tracks to the same high standards I have done so far in my career. It is amazing though to have landed so high in the chart in such a short space of time and I have to thank all those who have been supporting me because without you guys I wouldn’t be where I am now.

Hardwell chooses winners for the 2014 New Years Eve Contest of a Lifetime

Hardwell, freshly crowned as the world’s #1 DJ by DJ Magazine, recently teamed up with Vancouver powerhouse promoters Solid Events & clubZone to hold a New Year’s Eve contest where winners would receive the NYE prize of a lifetime.  The prize included:

  • Flights for 4 people, anywhere in North America to Vancouver
  • 3 nights hotel accommodation
  • VIP tickets to see Hardwell’s NYE 2014 Event by Solid
  • Limo pick up from the airport
  • Complimentary “bottle” of something suspicious
  • … and even $500 cash

Entrants had to submit a 30 second original video telling Hardwell why they should be the lucky ones.  The top 10 entrants based on votes were eligible to win, and the winner was then chosen by Hardwell himself based on creativity, humour & relevancy.

As the contest close date loomed closer (Friday Dec 13th), it turned into a vicious battle between the final contestants.  On the last day of voting, over 50,000 people showed up to help their friends win.

Today, Hardwell announced the winner: Josh from Nova Scotia (apparently somewhere in the remote Eastern part of Canada) for his team’s very creative “Hardwell meets The Hangover part IV” 30 second short film.  Josh will be bringing his best friends for life Dexter, Cameron and Christien (who is notably absent from the video, presumably stuck on a rooftop somewhere) on the journey to Vancouver, flying out on Dec 31st for one hard adventure.

Hardwell Video Contest

There were some very unique & creative entries that included a dancing lamb, 2 marriage proposals, a Hardwell twist on the classic holiday hit “Santa Clause is Coming to town”, and lots of begging and pleading.

Special thanks to Hardwell, Solid Events and everyone who contributed content to this contest and helped round up votes.  We’ll be running this contest again in 2014 so stay tuned.
